Currently, the Centre is involved in a joint venture with Canadian
mining company Ivanhoe. In an effort to employ disadvantaged women
in the community Ivanhoe has agreed to buy sample bags which are sewn
by Yarmag women. This project is a wonderful example of how the corporations
who have economic interests in Mongolia can make a positive impact
on the local micro-economy. Previously Ivanhoe had sourced these bags
from a foriegn manufacturer. Ivanhoe pays a small premium for the
bags in exchange for an opportunity to make a positive contribution.
The women employed through the Ivanhoe project often have small children and are therefore unable to work outside of the home. To this point, two women have made enough money to buy gers which provide a home for them and their family.
