In 1993 Didi Kalika, an Australian yoga teacher living in UB was moved by the plight of the children living on the streets and founded the Lotus Children's center. She started simply by giving food and basic medical care, and soon realized that serious change was nessessary to make real impact. INTRODUCTION TO LOTUS | The Lotus Children’s Centre is a Mongolian non-profit, non-government organisation working with vulnerable children and families to provide the basic human rights of shelter, food and education. We care for up to 150 abused, orphaned and abandoned children at any one time. Initially set up to provide basic needs for survival for just a handful of children in one apartment, Lotus has developed a kindergarten and a primary school to provide educational foundation, and is developing vocational pathways for employment opportunities.
Lotus has developed several businesses to support Lotus financially and serve as a platform for our vocational training programs. TheAnanda vegetarian cafe has been part of the Lotus family for four years. TheLotus Guesthouse opened its doors on the 1st of April 2009 and offers a “home away from home” for our visitors and guests.
We are largely dependent on our generousdonors as we receive very limited financial support from Mongolian authorities. Also ourvolunteers play an important role in the development of the children and the Lotus organisation. |
