News from the Lotus Centre

Here in Mongolia, the school year has just broken up for the summer. The Lotus Centre now cares for 125 children from our six-month-old baby, Erdene-Bilek, to our young adults aged twenty.

On the first of June we celebrated children?s day with activities that included eye checks for all our children by the Rotary club, kite flying and a trip to the park.

This year we also celebrated the Lotus Centre?s tenth anniversary. On the forth of June we held a successful fundraising dinner, which included a performance of song, dance and yoga by our children. Many thanks to Max, Pam and Joy for all their hard work. On the fifth, we celebrated with a day of performances, food and games. It was an enjoyable day for all, with many thanks going to Cecilia and her circus girls. The day finished with the children breaking open a bee shaped piņata filled with candies. For the twentieth anniversary, we look forward to seeing the Lotus Children bring along all their children!

Summer has arrived here in Mongolia, although the weather still changes day to day from hot and dry to cold and wet. Our children are preparing for their move to summer-camp in Terelj, where they will stay for the next three months until school resumes. The camp is held in a beautiful natural environment where the children will enjoy craft activities, sports and swimming in the nearby river.

The coming months should be busy as always, with plans to build a well to provide easier access to water for more of our children, and moves to renovate our school building so that we can accommodate more classes and ages of children. We have also made the first moves to extending our activities to Erdenet, a smaller Mongolian city which currently does not have adequate facilities for caring for street children. Meanwhile, we will be taking care of the everyday needs of 125 children, watching our babies learn to walk and talk and all our children grow.

Thanks and best wishes,
From the Lotus Centre.
